Jaikel Galante (b.1996) was born in Malakoff, a small village located in the southeast of the island. In 2019, he obtained a Bachelor Degree in art with a second class Honors in the First Divison, specialising in printmaking at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute. Throughout his career, he has been a painter, sculptor, and printmaker, as well as having a history of being an art teacher. His work typically tells stories of society, identity, and origins, with the technical and emotional aspects of his works kept raw — paint is not typically blended out smoothly and clay used in sculptures is rough apparent fingermarks. Jaikel typically leans towards materials he can give a second life to, such as sheet metal, iron, plastic and wood which are recyclable.
