SDG 14: Life Below Water

Artist Name: Stephanie Neville

Country: South Africa

Stephanie employs traditional handmade techniques such as embroidery, sewing, knitting and sculpting. Her work deals primarily with themes of identity, feminism, diaspora, memory, absence as well as environmental sustainability, influenced by the transient lifestyle of the UAE.

Conservation of the ocean is a cause dear to her heart. She depicts it in this interpretation of SDG 14, which translates the fragility and beauty of our oceans. She created soft sculptures of corals and shells amongst the sea of translucent organza reminiscent of water. With an awareness of the impact of the textile industry on the environment, she attempts to use recycled and discarded threads where possible.
